Painting Assignment - Appropriation

My version of "portrait of the artist as an evolving landscape"
James Gleeson

In this exercise we had to choose a self portrait of an artist, copy it as close to the original as I could and then replace it with my own image in the same manner.

This is the one of me, it is still a working progress. Both of these paintings are painted in acrylics where as the original was painted in oil. James Gleeson's original is 152x204cm, mine are both 28x35cm. Following these two, my next task is to paint 7 off-springs, varying each one either by using a different technique, style or medium. To view James Gleeson's original follow this link this link.

Experimenting

Some of the works that I have now come consider my treasures are those that I decided to experiment on. They were the ones that led me off in new directions. Now I no longer fret when my work isn't turning out the way I want it.....I just then take the opportunity to do something radical. This painting was missing that something, until I let the ink run down her face. I now love it.

Self Portrait Project

Those of you who know me, you will know just how thunderstruck I was after viewing the "beyond the screen of light" exhibit at the National Gallery of Victoria in 2005. Since then, I have been referencing the great man in many of my works.

My first painting class project this year is; select an artist and try to reproduce a painting (must be a self portrait), paint my own self portrait in this manner, develop my own series of images dealing with the theme of identity. Total of nine images.

I chose James Gleeson's "portrait of the artist as an evolving landscape" oil on canvas 152x204cm, 1993.

To see Gleeson's self portrait that I am using as a starting point follow this link. Due to copyright laws I cannot show you this image so please follow the link to view.

It will be a daunting task and I think I may have chosen something beyond my capabilities at this particular stage - but, I have thrown down the gauntlet and here I go!

I will be posting my works in progress from time to time.

News Flash

News - Study Grant winner gives back to City of Darebin

Like dozens of NMIT students, Diploma of Visual Art student, Adriana Cosshall, received a real financial and psychological boost last year when she was awarded $1000 during the 2010 NMIT Study Grants program.

“The Study Grant lifted the burden of trying to scrape up the cash to buy the extra art materials needed for my art,” says Adriana. “I now have a well stocked supply of materials and hence I am busy creating!”

Adriana's award came courtesy of the City of Darebin - one of many NMIT Study Grant sponsors from industry and the local community.

As a way of thanking the City of Darebin for their support Adriana offered to donate one of her own works to the Council's Art and History Collection.

Not all submissions are accepted into the City of Darebin Collection. Adriana submitted three works to the Council's evaluation process and one of her works, a mixed media piece entitled Not All That Glitters is Gold was accepted.

Not All That Glitters is Gold is a mixed media work featuring Mookite Jasper (rock) and citrine (crystal) on canvas. Adriana says her work is about duality: "... sometimes there are hidden treasures that emerge after bad times. What attracts us is not all that glitters ... that's what's life's all about ... looking beyond the surface”.

Dr Jacqueline Healy, curator of the City of Darebin Art Collection said that she was "delighted to accept the artwork into the City of Darebin Art Collection".

Works in the City of Darebin Collection are displayed in Council facilities such as meeting rooms and libraries.

Adriana formally handed the work over to the City of Darebin at Bundoora Homestead Art Centre last Thursday, 21 January.

Adriana will also be part of an exhibition by second year NMIT Visual Arts students at Bundoora Homstead called Commonplace. The exhibition which runs from 2 June to 19 June will feature works by NMIT Visual Arts students that interpret the historical and contemporary identity of Bundoora Homestead.

In 2009 Adriana realised that life was too short to procrastinate about what she really wanted to do. "One such long-time dream was completing my studies," said Adriana. “For those of you who attended the (Study Grants) Awards Night, I was the woman wearing the largest smile. Thank you NMIT and many thanks to Darebin Council for your generosity.”

Darebin Art Collection

Today was a huge one for me. I handed over my artwork 'Not All That Is Gold Glitters' to the Bundoora Homestead. So it is now official, one of my works is now apart of the 'Darebin Art Collection'.

The event was documented by a photo shoot. It will be featured in next year's NMIT brochure and kept for future advertising. There is talk that the Whittlesea Leader will run the story, however, this is still to be confirmed.

The painting's resting place is still to be determined. I hope it is somewhere where I can take my family and friends to see.

I Love Painting

Through the site 'LinkedIn' I have joined a few art groups. One relatively new site called 'I Love Painting' has accepted my request and I am now busy chatting with some very talented and interesting artists. A recent on-going discussion is focusing on exposing scams that are targeting artists all around the world.

I highly recommend joining.
