Emphasis in an
interior
Emphasis is an important key principal in design. It’s
purpose is to either highlight something or to hide or distract focus from an
area. It provides hierarchy and order in a space. In this interior the emphasis
is used in both ways, both highlighting or in distracting by placement of
certain objects.
Strong contrast and large amounts of yellow was chosen to
feature the importance and dominance of the signage and the large scaled
counter. The yellow objects and heavy form in the room takes priority over all
other things, this is also enforced by the asymmetrical layout. Whereas on the
other hand, the subordinate patterned screen draws the viewer’s attention and
lessens the sight of what lies behind it. This screen has another purpose which serves
to separate and define the two areas.
Proportion plays a part by creating the factor of thirds;
the large screen, the equally dominating counter, and in the centre the floor
to ceiling expanse of glass windows with a view.
There is harmony in the repeated use of the primary colours
and the contrast of white throughout the space. The red and yellow warms the
room and softens the clinical austerity of the volume.
The large windows flood the space with plenty of natural
light that bounces off all the reflective surfaces and makes interesting
shadows on the floors.
