Concept Board Statement
“ Light”
This Concept Board is
an exploration of the varied roles that light plays. It examines the actual
word ‘light’ in symbolic ways with a particular focus on dualities, as well as looking
into the act of illumination on objects and it’s reflective behaviour. There is
focus and concern with the diverse moods that can be created, the emotional and
physical response on the viewer, and the basic function and importance of light
in our everyday lives.
Elements such as the feathers on the light fitting, clouds
and even the symbolism of dancers who are light on their feet, are all there to
portray the spiritual and emotionally uplifting qualities of light. The links
between light and our emotions is well established, including the prevalence of
Seasonal Affective Disorder in Northern countries during the winter months, and
the need to treat this with artificial light that includes particular
wavelengths or colours.
Of course we only perceive light in comparison to its
absence, darkness. For this reason I have included chiaroscuro, the dark parts
of the light fitting and even the darker parts of the clouds are all there to
make the light more meaningful in comparison, more obvious and substantial. The
dualities of light and dark aspects form another layer of meaning to the
project and highlights the extremes.
Another facet of the concept board is the use of a generally
warm palette. Light, of course, can have different colours and since the focus
is on the uplifting of emotions a warmer light was chosen to portray this.
The design of board was structured so that the eye moves
around in an effortless spiral. The
triple, double, and single mounting of the images, firstly directs the viewer
to the focal point and then systematically leads them to all the surrounding images
in accordance to their importance. The images are purposely placed to face a
certain direction, the aim is to guide the viewer in the path of the spiral.
The lighter image of the clouds, feathers and other lighter pictures are placed
on the top to symbolically signify the heavens whilst the bottom images which
are darker serves to ground and convey the Earth. Overall the board reads like
a landscape.
